FOLKLORE MAGAZINE

For this design I envisioned a magazine entitled Folklore Magazine and created two essay features.
The first essay feature is Greenland Unicorns and the Magical Alicorn By Natalie Lawrence. I wanted to use expressive typography as a way to capture the essence of the folklore tales being told throughout the essays. I utilized a wave going through the type all throughout the feature, starting with the title of the feature, and continued in the pull quotes featured throughout the spread feature. I used the typeface Mrs Eaves OT for the title and subtitles throughout the essay, and the typeface Mr Eaves OT for the body copy and pull quotes. Since these typefaces were created by the same type foundry, they pair beautifully together and do a wonderful job at capturing the spirit of the folklore. As for the colours, I wanted to use bold and bright colours that are found in nature to continue to push the lush and mystical theme of folklore.
The second essay feature is The Sound and the Story Exploring the World of Paradise Lost By Philip Pullman. I continued the theme of expressive typography that had been established in the previous feature, as well as, continued with the same typefaces. For the colour pallet I wanted a somewhat unconventional colour combination that was both attention grabbing and dark at the same time. Since this essay's main topic includes discussions of the afterlife, I wanted to use a bright orange and dark plum to recall the typically imagined colours in hell, but in a very subtle way. I also continue with the theme of spiraling into the afterlife with the use of spirals throughout this feature. Although this is a very unconventional way of displaying type, it is only featured on the poems, which discuss the descent into the afterlife, therefore staying with the theme. Displaying the poems this way is also a great way to keep the reader's attention on the text.
